The Process
BRINGING SQUID
FROM SEA TO MARKET
Bringing the best sustainably caught squid home
What does it take to bring the best sustainably caught squid to your table?
Fishing Cape Hope Squid isn’t just a job, it’s a craft.
Our fishermen use the jigging method, an environmentally friendly technique that ensures sustainable stocks and a premium quality catch.

Labour and Skills
Jigging requires patience, precision, and years of experience.
Equipment
State-of-the-art blast freezers ensure squid are frozen immediately after capture to preserve peak quality.
The Challenge
Fishing is unpredictable. Weather, market prices, and access to fair trade channels impact our work.
Sustainability
Green-listed by WWF-SASSI, our fishing method preserves marine biodiversity

What is Jigging?
Squid fishing by jigging is a sustainable, eco-friendly method used by small-scale fishers in the Eastern Cape to catch Cape Hope Squid (Loligo Reynaudii). Unlike trawling, jigging involves lowering fishing lines with colourful, barbless lures (jigs) into the water and moving them up and down to mimic prey. Squid latch onto the jigs and are then carefully hauled in by hand.
Jigging is WWF-SASSI green-listed, ensuring that squid stocks remain healthy. It is a selective, low-impact fishing technique that minimises bycatch and protects marine habitats. Though physically demanding and dependent on unpredictable ocean conditions, it provides stable livelihoods for small-scale fishers and their families. By supporting iThemba and its co-operatives, international buyers help sustain coastal communities and ethical seafood sourcing.
Harnessing light to attract squid
Fishing is mostly done at night, as squid are attracted to artificial light. Small to medium-sized boats, equipped with powerful lamps, venture into the ocean, where experienced fishers rely on their knowledge of water temperature, currents, and squid migration patterns. Once caught, squid are immediately blast-frozen to preserve their freshness for export to premium markets.
