Our Co-operatives
Three communities,
one mission
Meet the co-operatives at the heart of iThemba. From Hamburg to Phozi and Wesley, each group combines traditional knowledge with modern markets to uplift families and empower their communities.
Umlibo Co-operative
Named after a climbing vine, Umlibo Co-op symbolises the resilience and upward journey of its members.
Based in the Eastern Cape, the co-op brings together people who have long relied on the ocean to survive. Many, like Ntobekaya and Sindiswa, recall going to the sea as children when there was no food at home.
Today, the co-op offers legal, sustainable ways to earn a living through fishing and harvesting. Members speak of transformation: children fed and schooled, homes built, dignity restored.
Umlibo isn’t just a source of income – it’s a foundation for generational change. As one member puts it: “We all prosper.”

Kiwane Co-operative
Kiwane Co-op, founded in 2018 in the rural village of Phozi, emerged from years of hardship and exploitation by commercial fishing operators.
Now, with support from Blue Wave Atlantis, the members are growing a legal, sustainable fishing business. They catch octopus, collect seaweed, and aim to buy their own vessel.
Youth training, women’s inclusion, and environmental care are core values. Members earn a modest monthly income but speak of big changes – food security, home building, schooling, and hope.
“The ocean gives us life,” says Chairman Otto Nozewu. “And we want to better the lives of as many people as possible.”

Siyaphambili Co-operative
Formed in 2005, Siyaphambili means “We are moving forward” – and that’s exactly what this co-op is doing.
Driven by progress and founded to fight for fishing rights and permits, it has since become a powerful platform for community upliftment. Members include fishers, activists, and harvesters who are passionate about sustainability and social inclusion.
They promote responsible fishing, fight environmental threats, and ensure women and youth are active in the seafood value chain.
For many, the co-op has transformed survival into stability, creating jobs, dignity, and a shared legacy. “I show them the road,” says chairperson Ayanda Yekani. “They must follow.”
Together, We Thrive
Each co-op has their own rich history and plays a vital role in our collective success. They have a shared mission:
Umlibo, Kiwane, and Siyaphambili are coastal cooperatives built on a shared history of survival, resilience, and respect for the ocean.
Each co-op offers a legal and sustainable way for local fishers and harvesters to earn a living from the sea. Members draw on traditional knowledge passed down through generations, combining it with new opportunities to support their families, educate their children, and improve their communities.
Whether it’s harvesting seaweed, fishing for octopus, or catching squid, these co-ops are restoring dignity, creating jobs, and lifting people out of poverty – together.
When one member prospers, everyone does.
