Community Impact
Fishing that
transforms lives
Empowering communities beyond
the catch
More than fishing, iThemba is about empowerment. By cutting out middlemen, our fishermen earn better wages, improving access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure in their villages.
At the heart of
iThemba are women
Their strength, skills, and stories carry generations of knowledge and care. For many, the sea has been both provider and teacher, wisdom passed down from grandmothers to mothers, now shared with daughters and grandchildren. Women like Ndileka, Ntobekaya and Sindiswa are not only contributing to their families’ survival but also building a legacy of resilience and pride through their work with the co-ops.
Their hands harvest seaweed, catch fish, clean, sort, and manage operations – tasks that are often physically demanding but deeply valued. In these roles, women are leading quietly but powerfully, holding communities together, one meal and one school fee at a time.
Their involvement is also opening doors for the next generation.
Children stay in school longer, clinics become more accessible, and young people begin to see the ocean as a source of opportunity, not risk. Youth raised in these coastal communities are beginning to imagine futures within legal, sustainable fishing – where tradition meets training, and skills lead to a better life.
These are more than jobs.
They are lifelines, restoring dignity, creating purpose, and laying the foundation for a future where families thrive and hope lives on.
